Observations in the
Inner Field of Two Tones
Composition for Re-Patched Ensemble
composition
Overview:Observations in the Inner Field of Two Tones (2024) is a composition for mixed ensemble written for the RE-PATCHED project, an international initiative dedicated to revisiting and reinterpreting the legacy of Polish composer Bogusław Schaeffer through contemporary experimental music practices.
The piece investigates how complex sonic environments can emerge from highly reduced material. Using only the natural overtone series of two fundamental tones, F and B, the composition explores the subtle acoustic phenomena that arise when performers engage with microtonal relationships, spectral resonances, beating patterns, and shifting harmonic tensions. Rather than treating pitch as a fixed and stable entity, the work approaches it as a dynamic field shaped by listening, interaction, and continuous adjustment.
Structured in four interconnected phases, the score combines precise pitch organisation with open performance instructions. Musicians navigate between sustained tones, gradual microtonal movements, silence, and collective textures, relying primarily on listening rather than visual cues or conventional tuning systems. The electronic performers contribute abstract and texturally rich sonic materials that expand the acoustic space while remaining embedded within the ensemble's shared sound world.
The title refers to a process of attentive observation directed toward the inner life of sound itself. By focusing on a restricted harmonic vocabulary, the piece invites both performers and listeners to experience how seemingly minimal musical material can reveal intricate layers of sonic activity. Listening becomes not only a means of orientation but the central compositional force through which relationships, structures, and transformations are perceived.
The work was premiered by the RE-PATCHED Ensemble at Eđšeg Cultural Station in Novi Sad on 19 April 2024.
